Social Media Content Creators Fueling Parallel Market for Unlicensed Slimming Drug
A shadow market for unapproved weight-loss drugs is propelled by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on communication apps, according to new investigations.
Experimental Treatment Gaining Traction Via Social Media
The experimental drug, which remains in clinical trials, is being promoted by social media influencers for its alleged fat-burning properties. Followers are encouraged to contact these accounts privately for supplier links, while also receiving discount codes.
Active Trade on Social Networks
Separately, a flourishing market exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of members share comparison photos, injection guides and assertions of rapid UK delivery. Vendors market the substance there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for transactions.
Understanding The Experimental Drug
Retatrutide is an investigational injectable created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Early trials indicate it could assist individuals reduce up to a quarter of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed online as the next Ozempic.
Medical Professionals Express Concerns
However, physicians and pharmacists have warned that the sale of what remains an unapproved drug in the UK is a cause for concern and could result in users administering products of unknown origin.
Several professionals said the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the increasing cost of approved slimming products such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Status and Implementation
Marketing retatrutide on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed medication that cannot be marketed or supplied for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Some content creators attempt to sidestep the regulations by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled substance, but advertising and distribution can still breach pharmaceutical, marketing, and consumer regulations, risking fines, legal action or prison.
Platform Response and Content Elimination
Based on TikTok, the platform has removed problematic material and prohibited related keywords and query recommendations. The company said it was committed to keeping the platform safe and allocating resources in enhancing enforcement strategies.
Digital Trading Operations
Investigations also discovered communities with up to 9,000 participants marketing the experimental drug using Telegram's integrated discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” immediately brings up groups with thousands of members, filled with photos of slimming results, glowing testimonials and step-by-step guides for preparing or administering at residence.
After minutes of joining one community, a vendor shared WhatsApp details, where the majority of purchases occur. The vendor provided an guidebook and promised delivery within 48 hours. When asked whether the substance was genuine, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a alleged laboratory certificate. None asked about body mass, medical conditions or previous experience.
Item Information and Costs
Within these groups, posts show black plastic parcels with postal service labels, claiming to contain new batches. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can select between dry substance containers, mixed at home with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors usually sold at £160 for 20 milligrams. When asked how much time a pen should be used, vendors give conflicting answers ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Platform Oversight and Security Measures
A representative for Telegram said it actively monitored dangerous material on its platform including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Expert Warnings
“Individuals are administering substances they cannot confirm. Although the science behind this drug is sound, these digital versions may not contain what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmaceutical services at a pharmacy service.
A medical professional of Asda Online Doctor linked the increase in demand to recent cost increases for approved slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, individuals are turning to social media. But fake treatments are extremely dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the environment they were produced in was clean,” she said.
Her staff has previously encountered individuals injured by personal administration from unverified suppliers. “We recognize the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is gambling with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These substances could be contaminated or improperly measured.”
Manufacturer Statement
A representative from Eli Lilly stated retatrutide was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been reviewed or authorized by any government authority globally. “Therefore at this time no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, adding that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly investigational substance not yet approved … may expose users to potentially significant health risks”.
