The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
