An individual profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was officially announced, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of the event.

Market Movement in Wagers

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be removed from office by the close of the month increased in the hours before former President Trump stated on January 3rd that Maduro had been taken into custody.

One account, which joined the platform recently and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $436,000 from a modest bet of over $32,000.

It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Trading information shows that traders estimated the likelihood of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.

But the odds had increased to over 10% by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the first hours of Saturday, suggesting a rapid movement in betting activity just before the social media post was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a bet based on confidential knowledge," stated Dennis Kelleher.

Several of other platform users also profited tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Politicians are growing concerned.

A new rule put forward on the start of the week seeks to ban federal workers from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

Market Background

Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in the United States, with users able to wager on everything from sports to political events.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. Yet it has experienced less resistance during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the forecasting industry.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
