A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose term concluded the previous year. This project was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its role in national projects. They were built at an accelerated rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national projects.
